Farming bluefin tuna for aquaculture
Interest in the sustainability of marine resources has been increasing globally as difficulties in securing marine resources over the world arise due to overfishing and illegal fishing methods and operations.
The world needs ways of fishing that appropriately conserve and effectively utilize marine resources, while considering ecosystems and preventing overfishing.
As a corporation that handles marine resources, we strive for the sustainable and effective use of ocean resources.
The fishing of bluefin tuna, a type of tuna particularly beloved by the Japanese and considered a luxury item, is internationally regulated due to concerns about marine resources conservation. In 2007,We established the company for farming bluefin tuna in Kochi Prefecture , and have been shipping farmed tuna since 2009.
Obtaining MSC/ASC CoC Certification for Responsible Seafood Supply
Since 2006, the Kyokuyo Group has been handling MSC and ASC certified products, working actively to expand the registered fish species and handling volume.
For handling certified products, we conduct annual e-learning as part of internal training for staff responsible for registered species or products, as well as for those involved in procurement and sales. This e-learning begins with understanding the importance of sustainable use of marine resources and initiatives for conserving biodiversity. It emphasizes that handling these certified products contributes to a sustainable society and enhances corporate value.
The Kyokuyo Group promotes awareness on Sustainable Development Goal 14, "Life Below Water" via these activities.
Joining Marine Eco-Label Japan Council
Marine Eco-Label Japan (MEL) is a Japanese labeling system for seafood that certifies fisheries and aquaculture that actively works to conserve resources and ecosystems so that they can be optimally used for future generations and contributes to the achievement of SDGs and new development in the Japanese fishing industries.
In June 2018, the Kyokuyo Group joined the Marine Eco-Label Japan (MEL) Council, the scheme owner of MEL. Additionally, between late 2023 and early 2024, the company obtained aquaculture certification for red sea bream, yellowtail, and burihira (a yellowtail-goldstriped amberjack crossbreed species) and chain of custody certification. Going forward, we will continue to contribute to the sustainable use of marine resources, ecosystem conservation, and the preservation of Japan's rich and diverse fish culture for future generations.
